Who I am

SUMAN GURUNG
Mountaineer / Photographer and High Altitude Trainer

Born in 27th of September 1985, I, Suman Gurung was raised in the beautiful village of Laprak. The village in Darchey Rural Municipality of Gorkha district has a fantasy-like setting proving to be an excellent vantage point to witness the natural beauty of central Nepal. Having completed my schooling at Laprak, I headed to Kathmandu to pursue further education. The weak financial status of my family made it a must for me to earn a livelihood in order to support my studies. With the majority of my relatives and friends have had experiences in tourism, I was enticed by the thoughts of wandering around the country making an income at the same time. My tourism career took flight initially as a porter, eventually as an assistant guide, and then as a trekking guide as the freelancer. After receiving guide training from Nepal Academy of Tourism & Hotel Management (NATHM), I dedicated my days in full trekking involvements.
Realizing better opportunities awaited me in mountaineering, I received mountaineering training from Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). The first of my involvements in mountaineering began as a guide and as I gained experiences, I also led mountaineering expeditions. The chills of the Himalayas began to fill my cravings for thrill whilst also providing surreal natural beauty. Amadablam, Manaslu and Everest Expedition have to be the most premium of destinations that have been done under my guidance. These experiences have had lasting impressions on my run as a mountaineering expert and also were feats of great personal gratification. The training and prior experiences were extensively used to make the expeditions hugely successful.
Another of my marquee mountaineering success has to be a climbing in Alps.
This was the result which not just gave me ideas about the mountaineering in various ranges around the world but also helped broaden my skill set and caliber. In the meantime, I also gained mastery of French along with the already familiar English. Moreover, I had the good fortune of training and consulting with the Nepali Peace Keeping Force. The training included the forces deployed in the Middle East and introducing them to snow & avalanche mountaineering activities.
The most esteemed of the peaks that I have conquered on my career as a mountaineering guide and expert are the Mt Everest (8848m) in 2017, Manaslu (8163m) in 2018, and Ama Dablam (6856m) in 2016 among numerous others. Also, the foreign countries that I have visited on more than a decade of my involvement in tourism are France, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium and Spain.
Some of the trainings that I have received are Basic and Advanced Mountaineering Training from NMA and Guide Training from NATHM. Similarly, I have received training in Mountain Navigation and High Mountain Rescue from Nepal Mountaineering Instructor Association (NMIA) and Aspirant Guide and Mountain Guide Training from Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA) and certified by the International Federation of Mountain Guide Association (IFMGA/ UIAGM). Currently, I am also proudly associated with NNMGA as a board member, and Convener for Climbing Route exploration & development and a member and instructor in NMIA.
Apart from being a professional mountaineering guide, I also am a passionate photographer and filmmaker. These have been hobbies of mine during my travels as I find it easier to express stories via pictures and vibrant colors. As such, the pictures that I have been able to frame are present at: https://www.instagram.com/guiding_phography/ and http://www.gurungsuman.blogspot.com/.
